The exterior of the existing garage already looked great, so the challenge of this ADU conversion was not to ruin it. Primed to be living space, the garage possessed a handsome street-facing façade, definite aesthetic integration with the main residence, a straightforward separate entrance, and a natural connection with the communal lawn area. Our studio layout maximized valuable interior space, while a couple deliberate steps preserved and furthered the exterior aesthetic. Traditionally the City of Santa Barbara requires garage doors to be removed on ADUs, but we thought these doors were worth keeping since we weren’t excited about placing windows on a driveway, and a blank wall wouldn’t look right either. After proposing an additional wall behind the doors (thus reducing street noise even more), the City allowed us to keep the doors. Lastly, we threw in a cute window under the gable to add a residential touch and allow for cross ventilation.
